Akai tonbo (red dragonfly) [2003 rev. 2011]

This short piece for solo flute is inspired by a painting by Japanese artist Takahashi Biho (born in 1873) named “Dragonfly and Lotus”. The composition makes use of heterophony as a way to evoke poetically the fly and subtil buzz made by this fascinating insect.

Three Vintage Portraits of Exquisite Ladies Expressing Their Frame of Mind [2018]

1 – Innocence dressed in blue

2 – Inducement dressed in green

3 – Melancholy dressed in yellow

This work was deeply inspired by three old portraits of young ladies, each with a unique expression, revealing the depths of their souls. The ladies express themselves in a simple, elegant, self-assured and natural way.

My compositional procedures always start from extra-musical objects as the main source of creation and inspiration. These extra-musical objects can appear in my work in the form of colors, feelings, images, poetry, states of spirits, etc. My hypothesis is that these extra-musical objects are mainly responsible for the existence of the musical work, independently of the will of its author.

Written and dedicated to Michael Hall (Viola) and Aaron Larget-Caplan (Guitar), premiered at Now Musique – April 13, 2019 – Arlington Street Church, Boston.

The Dreams and Disillusions of a Tightrope Walker [2018]

Harp and Vibraphone

Duration: 14’.34’’

The Dreams and Disillusions of a Tightrope Walker [2018]

Written and dedicated to Duo Harpverk from Iceland,  “The Dreams and Disillusions of a Tightrope Walker” is deeply inspired by Nietzche book “Thus Spake Zarathustra”. Written in 5 short movements for harp and vibraphone, the composition works as a kind of a ‘baroque’ micro opera, where both instruments intend to express the inner feelings of a funambule in his/her lonely and dangerous performance, bringing to the listener states of joy, sweetness, sadness, odd memories, fears, and weirdness. The music is very simple, almost naive.

The harmonic material is based on the Jewish mode “freygish” (Phrygian Dominant scale but here with sharpened 7th). Here is Nietzsche passage used for inspiration: “Then that came to pass which silenced every mouth and fixed every eye. For in the meantime the Rope-Dancer had begun his task: he had stepped forth from little door and walked upon the rope which was stretched between two towers so that it spanned the market-place and the people.

When he was midway the little door opened and a gaily dressed fellow like a clown leaped out and went with quick steps after the first. “On with you, lame-leg,” he cried in a terrible voice.“On with you, lazy-bones, cheat, sallow-face! – lest I tickle thee with my feet! What dost thou here between the towers? Thy place is in the tower. Thou shouldst be jailed, for thou barred free way to thy better!” [Friedrich Nietzsche, “Thus Spake Zarathustra” 1883-92]

Duo Harpverk are: Katie Buckley (Harp) and Frank Aarnink (Vibraphone). Recorded at its premiere in Mengi, Reykjavík, Iceland – Feb, 24, 2019

Lamentations d’Yrmeyah (2018)

Lamentations d’Yrmeyah was written specially for French female vocal trio “Les Itinérantes”. It was premiered at 3 different locations in August, 2018 in France. This recording was made at Château de Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The piece is very simple, with a sad atmosphere, despite of it alternating moods (major and minor chords). It is sung like a folk song.  The lyrics is extracted from the Book of Jeremiah.

Les Itinérantes are: Manon Cousin, Pauline Langlois de Swarte and Elodie Pont.

“For a voice of lamentation is heard from Zion: How devastated we are. We are greatly ashamed, for we have abandoned the land; our dwellings have been torn down. Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people! My soul, my soul! I am in anguish! Oh, my heart! My heart is pounding in me; I cannot be silent, because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.”

Four Impressions on a Portrait of a Female Worker from Wyszków by Alter Kacyzne (1927) (2018)

Written and dedicated to Qualea Trio from Goiás, Brazil, Four impressions on a portrait of a female worker from Wyszków by Alter Kacyzne (1927) came just after a first look at Kacyzne’s photograph. The woman portrayed made a deep impression on me and worked as an extramusical object to inspired this sweet and melancholic and somehow harsh composition.

The feelings I’ve expressed in this composition is consistent by the personal history each Jew went through during the WWI and WWII and the Holocaust. Art can be an effective and powerful tool to express poetically the inner misery each individual carries through one existence.

For this reason the thematic material for all sections is very similar and the pieces are deliberately kept short, in suspension or with a feeling of incompleteness or non closure.

Kacyzne was a Jewish  writer, poet and photographer coming  from a very poor family. Born in Vilnius, Lithuania (1885) and died in Temopil, Poland (1941). He was an autodidacte and learned himself to read and write in Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew,Polish, German and French. In 1909, he moved to Ekaterinoslav (Ukraine) where he married Khana and learned photography. He travelled throughout Poland after WWI, chronicling Jewish life. Kacyzne tried to escape Nazi persecution in Poland and moved to Ternopil in 1941. That time the city was already occupied by the Nazis.

He was beaten to death by Ukrainian collaborators during the extermination of the town’s Jewish population. His wife was killed in the concentration camp, while his only daughter Sulamita survived hiding in Poland as a non-Jew.

Qualea Trio are: Ricardo Freire (Clarinet); Sonia Ray (Doublebass) and Werner Aguiar (Guitar). This work was recorded in Norway in 2018 during Qualea Trio’s Europe tour.

Visiones Fugaces en color sepia (2012)

For Viola and Doublebass

Duration: 11’.25”

Comissioned and premiered by Dúo Altbass – Barcelona (Viola: Mónica Cruzata; Doublebass: Luís Cojal). The wonderful performance displayed here was made by Jing Shao (Viola) and Luis Fonseca (Doublebass) recorded live at Salamanca Conservatory – Spain, in 2013.

“Visiones Fugaces en color sepia” brings old memories in form of music. It works like a soundtrack for vintage movie, expressionist, simplistic and poetically. The works is divided into four movements, each one inspiring for a specific image:

1 – La Vieja Dolora en la calle vacía

2 – De repente un organito sona tan patético

3 – Allí viene el pequeño circo de las illusiones

4 – De la ventana de un automóbil en movimiento

Two Mechanical Birds and a Melancholic Cage (2008)

Duration: 8’.34”

I – the mechanical hawk

II – the mechanical crow

III – the melancholic cage

Written for and premiered by Nieuw Ensemble from Amsterdam, conducted by Celso Antunes. This piece was awarded at 1st BAM-Dialogue – Amsterdam, 2009. The work was created bearing in mind the traditional Chinese mechanical birds. Rather than being a programmatic piece of music, Two Mechanical Birds and a Melancholic Cage brings to the listener the feelings provoked by those charming automata, suggesting the movements of gears, chirpings and a kind of poetic strangeness. To the composer, each one of the sections brings a feeling of hopelessness and solitude.

Two baroque sadness y uma vals ‘desvairada’ para él (2006)

Alto Recorder and Piano

Dedicated to and premiered by Projeto DuoBrasil – Betiza Landim (Alto Recorder) and Daniela Carrijo (Piano) at Teatro Rondon Pacheco, Uberlândia, August, 27th, 2006.

Duration: 9’.22”

This composition takes part in the CD “Projeto DuoBrasil: música erudita brasileira para flauta doce e piano”. Scored in three movements: I – Entrée; II – Passacaglia; III – una vals ‘desvairada’ para él. “Entrée” deals with a poetic melancholie, contemplative and respectful. The slow movement and the Recorder’s ornamentations allude to a handelian baroque atmosphere. “Passacaglia” is a cyclical danse, the piano playing an endless looping (ostinato) in unisono with the Recorder. The ‘vals’ is a “presto delirante” virtuosi movement, with large leaps on the piano part and rapid melodic patterns for the Recorder.

Projeto DuoBrasil is an important project for revival and nurturing of contemporary compositions for Recorder and Piano by Brazilian composers. My long partnership with Betiza Landim and Daniela Carrijo gave birth to some very representative works for Recorder and Piano, since Projeto DuoBrasil  has commissioning me works for each one of the Recorder family and Piano. I’ve written “two baroque sadness…” for Alto Recorder and Piano, “Tre Arcani Antiche” for Soprano Recorder and Piano, “Four Red Leaves” for Bass Recorder and Piano. On the list there are two more pieces: one for Sopranino Recorder and Piano and the other for Tenor Recorder and Piano.

Trinidad Lunar

Trinidad Lunar

Trinidad Lunar (2012)

Mezzosoprano & Piano

Duration: 8’.12”

Based on the eponymous work of Isidro Iturat , Catalan poet based in São Paulo. The musical composition is based on the three poems that form the trilogy, each one referring to a phase of the moon. In Iturat’s words, the moon is one of the most universal images that the human unconscious used to represent the eternal feminine and each of the lunar phases reveals one of the fundamental archetypes.

Thus, the waning moon is a virgin woman, who has not yet awakened to love; the crescent moon, the woman who has already incorporated the erotic and loving experience; the full moon, the mother. Mezzo: Poliana Alves; Piano: Fabio Santos. Live recording  made during the XX Abrão Calil National Piano Contest in Ituiutaba, MG – September, 2013 – when Antonio Celso Ribeiro was the central composer at this competition.
